Hey y'all! If you’ve ever sat in a church pew or stared at your reflection in the mirror wondering, "Is this it? Am I actually doing what God put me here to do?", I want you to know you are definitely not alone.
As a Christian life coach, I talk to people who feel like their "calling" is some elusive treasure map hidden in a vault they can’t open. They know God has a plan, but for some reason, that plan feels miles away or completely out of reach.
The truth is, your purpose isn't usually "missing." Most of the time, it’s just being obscured by a few common hurdles.
Today, I want to walk through ten reasons why your Christian life purpose might feel out of reach and, more importantly, how we can start fixing that right now.
1. You’re Waiting for a "Lightning Bolt" Moment
A lot of us grew up hearing stories of burning bushes and voices from the clouds. We’re waiting for a dramatic, cinematic sign to tell us exactly what to do. When that doesn't happen, we assume we must not have a purpose yet.
The Fix: Realize that God often speaks in a "still, small voice." Instead of waiting for a lightning bolt, look at the "embers" already glowing in your life, your natural talents, the things that make your heart break, and the opportunities right in front of you. Purpose is often a slow burn, not a sudden explosion.
2. The Comparison Trap
It is so easy to hop on Instagram and see someone else living out their "calling" in a way that looks shiny and impactful. When we compare our "behind-the-scenes" to someone else’s highlight reel, we end up feeling like our own contributions are small or meaningless.
The Fix: Remember that the Body of Christ has many parts. If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? Your purpose is uniquely tailored to your design. Stop looking at their lane and start focusing on the race God set before you. 3. You’ve Confused "Purpose" with "Career"
This is a big one. We often think our purpose has to be our 9-to-5 job. If you’re working in accounting but feel called to ministry, you might feel like you’re "failing" your purpose every day you sit at a desk.
The Fix: Your career is a vehicle for your purpose, not the purpose itself. Your purpose might be to bring light and integrity into the corporate world, or to be a prayer warrior for your coworkers. When you separate "what you do for money" from "who you are in Christ," the pressure lifts.
4. Fear of Failure (and Success)
Sometimes we don't pursue our purpose because we're scared we’ll mess it up. Or, even scarier, we're worried about what will happen if we succeed and what God might ask of us next. This "analysis paralysis" keeps us stuck in the same place for years.
The Fix: Practice "holy grit." Understand that failure isn't the opposite of purpose; it's often the classroom where purpose is refined. God doesn't call the equipped; He equips the called. You don't have to be perfect; you just have to be obedient.
5. You’re Trying to Go It Alone
I see this so often in the coaching world. People try to "find themselves" in a vacuum. But the Bible is clear: we are designed for community. When we isolate, our perspective gets skewed, and we lose the encouragement we need to keep going.
The Fix: Get around people who can see the gold in you that you can't see in yourself. This is exactly why we created The Journey Collective. Having a community to back you up makes the path to your purpose feel a lot less lonely and a lot more reachable.

6. The Noise is Too Loud
We live in the loudest era of human history. Between podcasts, social media, news, and our own internal monologues, it’s hard to hear God’s direction. If your life is packed with "noise" from the moment you wake up until you hit the pillow, you’re drowning out the guidance you're seeking.
The Fix: Create "sacred silence." Even just 10 minutes a day of intentional quiet, no phone, no music, can clear the mental clutter. It’s in the quiet that we often find the clarity we’ve been praying for.
7. The Temptation to Conform
The world has a very specific idea of what "success" looks like. Sometimes, the purpose God has for us doesn't look like a promotion or a bigger house. If we are trying to satisfy the world’s expectations while following God’s call, we’re going to feel a constant, exhausting internal friction.
The Fix: Decide whose "Well done" you’re actually chasing. If you're chasing the world's approval, you'll never find your God-given purpose because they are running in opposite directions. Realign your values with Scripture, even if it makes you look a little "weird" to everyone else.
8. Unrealistic Expectations of Ease
There’s a common myth that if you’re "in God’s will," everything will be easy and doors will just swing open. So, when things get hard, we think, "Oh, I must have missed God. This can't be my purpose."
The Fix: Look at the life of Paul or even Jesus Himself. Purpose usually involves a cross before it involves a crown. Hardship doesn't mean you're on the wrong path; it often means you're on a path that actually matters. Don't let a "closed door" or a "rough season" convince you that you've lost your way.

9. You’re Living in the Past
Whether it’s a past sin you haven’t forgiven yourself for or a "glory days" season you’re trying to recreate, living in the "backwards" keeps you from the "forwards." You can't walk into your future purpose if you’re tethered to your past mistakes or successes.
The Fix: Accept God's grace as a daily reality. His mercies are new every morning, literally. Whatever happened yesterday is under the blood. Your purpose starts with the breath you just took. Focus on the next right step, not the steps you missed five years ago.
10. You Haven’t Asked the Creator Recently
It sounds simple, but we often spend more time talking about our purpose than talking to the One who designed it. We treat God like a GPS that we only check when we’re lost, rather than a passenger we’re traveling with.
The Fix: Go back to the source. Spend time in honest, raw prayer. Don't use "churchy" words: just tell Him you feel lost and you need a nudge. He’s more interested in your purpose than you are, I promise.

How to Start Fixing It Today
If you’re reading this and thinking, "Tony, I’ve got about seven of these going on at once," don't panic. You don't have to fix everything today. Finding your purpose isn't about a massive life overhaul; it's about shifting your focus back to the Father.
The most important thing you can do is take one small, intentional step.
Maybe that step is joining a community like The Journey Collective to get the support you need. It'll be live soon! Maybe it’s just taking five minutes to sit in silence and ask God for clarity.
Whatever it is, don't stay stuck in the "out of reach" feeling. Your purpose is closer than you think because the God who called you is already standing right there with you.
