Do you ever feel like everyone else received a clear, color-coded memo from God about their life’s purpose, and somehow yours got lost in the mail?
I talk to so many people who are absolutely exhausted by the "search for calling." They feel like they’re stuck in a spiritual waiting room, holding a ticket for a number that’s never called. They see people on social media living their "best life" and "walking in their destiny," and it just makes them feel... well, behind.
If that’s you, I want you to take a deep breath.
Finding your calling shouldn’t feel like a high-stakes scavenger hunt where God is hiding the clues and laughing while you struggle. That’s not His heart for you. In fact, most of the stress we feel around "calling" comes from our own expectations, or the world's expectations, rather than what God is actually asking of us.
Reclaiming your identity starts with realizing that your calling isn't a destination you arrive at; it’s a way you walk with Him right now. Let’s break it down into five simple, stress-free steps to help you move from where you are to where He’s leading.
1. Identify Your God-Given Gifts (The "Toolbox" Phase)
Before you try to figure out what you’re supposed to do, take a look at what you’ve been given.
God is a master craftsman, and He doesn’t send a plumber to do a job without a wrench. You have a unique "toolbox" filled with natural talents and spiritual gifts. Some people call these "strengths," but I like to think of them as the ways God’s grace naturally flows through you.
Don't overthink this! We often overlook our greatest gifts because they feel "too easy" to us. If you’re naturally great at organizing a chaotic room, you might think, “That’s not a calling, that’s just common sense.” No, that’s a gift! If you’re the person people always call when they need a listening ear, that’s not just "being a good friend", that’s a manifestation of the gift of encouragement or wisdom.
Ask yourself:
What activities leave me feeling energized rather than drained?
What comes naturally to me that others seem to struggle with?
What do people consistently thank me for?
When you start operating in your gifts, the stress begins to melt away because you’re no longer trying to be someone you aren't. You’re simply being who He made you to be.

2. Pay Attention to What Breaks Your Heart
There’s a concept often called "Holy Discontent." It’s that specific thing in the world that just... gets under your skin.
For some, it’s seeing kids go hungry. For others, it’s seeing people feel lonely or watching businesses operate without integrity. Your calling is often found at the intersection of your greatest joy and the world’s deepest need.
What makes you want to pound the table and say, "This isn't right!"? That emotional response isn't a coincidence. It’s a clue. God often uses our empathy to point us toward the people or problems He wants us to address.
Fear, guilt, and shame might be blocking your ability to see clearly. Once you clear out the noise, what’s left is usually a very clear sense of compassion for a specific group of people or a specific cause.
3. Notice Where Doors Are Opening
I’m a big believer that God isn't into making things unnecessarily difficult. Yes, there will be trials and hard work, but there is also such a thing as favor.
Sometimes we spend years trying to kick down a door that God has clearly locked, while ignoring three open windows and a sliding glass door right behind us. If you’ve been pushing and pushing in one direction and finding nothing but resistance and burnout, it might be time to look around.
Where is the "low-hanging fruit" in your life? Where are people inviting you to participate? Where are the needs that match your skills? Often, your calling is sitting right in front of you in the form of an opportunity you’ve been ignoring because it didn't look "spiritual" enough or "big" enough.
Remember, God provides for what He guides. If the resources, the peace, and the opportunities aren't there, it’s okay to step back and ask, "Lord, am I forcing this?"
4. Pray and Listen (The Peace Check)
This is where the "reclaiming you" part really happens. You cannot find your calling if you aren't talking to the One who called you.
But here’s the secret: prayer isn't just you giving God a grocery list of your questions. It’s about listening. It’s about cultivating an anchored peace that doesn't change when your circumstances do.
If you’re feeling stuck here, I highly recommend downloading our "3-Step Guide to Deepening Your Faith." It’s designed to help you cut through the mental clutter and actually hear that "still, small voice."
When you pray about your calling, don't just ask "What should I do?" Ask "Who do You want me to be today?" When you focus on being the person He called you to be, the doing usually takes care of itself. If you feel a deep sense of peace about a direction: even if it seems scary: that’s a green light.
5. Test Your Calling Through Action
The biggest mistake people make is waiting for 100% certainty before they take a single step.
Guess what? Certainty is a myth. Faith is the requirement.
You find your calling by doing, not just by thinking. Think of it like a test drive. If you think you’re called to mentor youth, don't quit your job and start a non-profit tomorrow. Volunteer for an hour on a Tuesday night. See how it feels. See if your gifts show up. See if that "heartbreak" turns into productive action.
Action brings clarity. If you try something and it’s a total flop, that’s great! You’ve just checked one thing off the list, which brings you one step closer to the right thing. This is how we build faith and resiliance - by being willing to try, fail, and get back up with God.
Reclaiming the Peace of "The Now"
At the end of the day your primary calling is simply to be a child of God. Everything else: your job, your ministry, your roles: is just the "how."
When you stop stressing about the "Grand Master Plan" and start focusing on these five simple steps, you’ll find that you don't have to go looking for your calling. Your calling will find you.
You’ll find yourself reclaiming your joy because you’re no longer performing for a God you think is disappointed in you. Instead, you’re partnering with a Father who is excited to work with you.
You’ve got this. More importantly, God’s got you.
