Ever feel like you’re living your life on repeat, but the song playing isn’t quite the one you were meant to dance to? You’re showing up, you’re working hard, and you’re doing all the "right" things, but there’s this nagging feeling in the back of your mind. A little whisper that says, “Is this really it? Isn't there something more I'm supposed to be doing for the Kingdom?”
If you’re nodding your head, you aren't alone. As an online Christian life coach, I talk to believers every single day who feel a massive disconnect between their Monday-through-Friday grind and the spiritual calling they know deep down is waiting for them.
The truth is, finding God’s calling shouldn't feel like trying to find a needle in a haystack while wearing a blindfold. Often, the reason we feel stuck isn't that God is hiding His will from us; it’s that we’ve accidentally tripped into a few common pitfalls.
Let’s look at the 7 mistakes you’re likely making, and how we can get you back on the path to purpose.
We’ve all heard the stories of the burning bush or the literal voice from the heavens. While God can do that, most of us spend our lives waiting for a massive, unmistakable sign while God is actually whispering in the mundane.
If you’re stuck in "sign-seeking" mode, you’re likely suffering from decision paralysis. You’re afraid to move because you haven’t seen a wet fleece or a neon sign in the sky. But here’s the secret: God often reveals the next step only after we take the first one.
Don't wait for the clouds to part. Start moving in the direction of your interests and your prayers, and trust that He will steer the ship once it’s in motion.

In our "me and my Bible" culture, we often think discernment is a solo sport. We think we need to go into a room, lock the door, and emerge only when we have a 10-year plan signed by the Holy Spirit.
But faith based coaching and biblical community teach us otherwise. You aren't always the best judge of your own gifts. Sometimes, a friend, a mentor, or a biblical life coach can see strengths in you that you’ve completely overlooked.
If you’re keeping your journey a secret, you’re missing out on the "iron sharpening iron" that makes the path clear. Calling is often confirmed through the mouths of others.
Do you ever feel a sense of holy discontent? Maybe you’re successful by the world’s standards, but you feel "stuck" or unfulfilled. A common mistake is assuming this feeling is just "ingratitude" or "burnout."
Actually, that disconnect is often a divine nudge. It’s God’s way of saying, "I have more for you." Instead of trying to suppress that feeling with more work or more distractions, bring it to the surface. Christian personal development isn't about being "happier"; it’s about aligning your daily reality with your eternal identity. If there’s a gap between who you are and what you’re doing, don't ignore it. Explore it.
This is a huge one. We often think finding our calling means finding the perfect 9-to-5 job. While your work is a part of how you serve God, your calling is much bigger than your career.
Your calling is about who you are and how you reflect Christ in whatever environment you’re in. If you think you can only fulfill your calling if you become a full-time missionary or a pastor, you’re limiting God’s reach.
Whether you’re a stay-at-home parent, a CEO, or a barista, you have a calling right now. When you stop obsessing over the "title" and start focusing on the "mission," the specific career steps usually start to fall into place.

Some people think that if they enjoy something, it must not be "spiritual" enough to be a calling. They think God’s calling must be something difficult and miserable.
But God is the one who gave you your personality, your quirks, and your natural talents! If you’re a math whiz, God probably isn't calling you to be a professional poet. If you love working with your hands, He might be calling you to create, not to sit in a cubicle.
Christian life coach sessions often focus on "clues" God has already left in your life, things you’re naturally good at and things that bring you joy. Don't ignore the way He wired you; it’s a blueprint for your purpose.
Are you a "researcher"? Do you spend months reading books about calling, listening to podcasts about purpose, and taking every personality test under the sun, but never actually doing anything?
Information is great, but transformation requires action. You can’t think your way into a calling; you have to live your way into it.
The mistake here is thinking that you need 100% certainty before you commit. In reality, God usually gives us just enough light for the very next step. If you’re waiting for the whole map to be unrolled, you’ll be standing in the same spot for years.

This is perhaps the most subtle mistake of all. We get so wrapped up in the what, what should I do? where should I go?, that we forget the Who.
Our primary calling is to be with Jesus. When our relationship with Him becomes a secondary priority to our "career goals," we lose the very peace we’re looking for. You can find the "perfect" job, but if you aren't walking closely with the Lord, you’ll still feel empty.
Finding God's calling is an overflow of intimacy with Him. If you find the Caller, the calling will eventually find you.
If you’ve read through these and thought, "Wow, Tony, I'm doing like five of those," don't sweat it. Most of us have been there! The fact that you’re even asking these questions means God is working in your heart.
You don't have to stay in that place of "stuckness." You were created for a purpose that brings you peace and honors Him. But sometimes, you just need a little bit of help to clear the fog and reclaim your identity in Christ.
