Ever had that nagging feeling that you’re “doing” Christianity wrong?
You wake up, hit the snooze button three times, scramble to find your Bible, read two verses before your kids start screaming or your phone starts buzzing with work emails, and you think: Welp, I failed at my spiritual life today.
If you’ve ever felt like your walk with God is just one more item on an already overflowing to-do list, I want you to take a deep breath. Right now. Inhale... exhale.
Being a follower of Jesus was never meant to be a high-stakes performance review. It wasn’t meant to be a source of chronic stress or a "perfect" routine that you have to maintain to keep God from being disappointed in you. As an online Christian life coach, the number one thing I see holding people back from true faith and resilience isn’t a lack of desire, it’s the weight of religious "shoulds."
We think we should pray for an hour. We should have a color-coded prayer journal. We should feel a spiritual high every single Sunday
.
But what if your spiritual walk could actually be... fun? What if it could be the part of your day that reduces your stress instead of adding to it?
Here are seven ways to stop the spiritual "performance" and start enjoying the journey.
1. Ditch the "Perfect Quiet Time" Narrative
We’ve all seen the Instagram photos: a steaming cup of artisan coffee, a perfectly highlighted Bible, a candle burning, and the sun rising beautifully in the background. If that’s your reality, awesome! But for most of us, life is a bit more chaotic.
The "right" way to connect with God is the way that actually happens. If you only have five minutes in the car before you walk into the office, guess what? That’s a holy five minutes. If you’re listening to an audio Bible while you fold laundry, that counts.
When we stop trying to create a "cinematic" spiritual experience, we open the door for a genuine one. God isn't waiting for you at a desk with a highlighter; He’s walking with you through the mess. 2. Take Your Faith Outdoors
There is something about being in nature that instantly lowers our cortisol levels and reminds us how big God is and how small our problems are. This is often called "forest bathing" or simply being mindful outdoors, and it’s one of the best ways to de-stress your spiritual walk.
You don’t need a theological degree to look at a sunset or a mountain range and feel a sense of awe. Try "prayer walking." Instead of sitting still (which can sometimes lead to falling asleep or your mind wandering to your grocery list), get your body moving. Talk to God about what you see. Thank Him for the design of the leaves or the crispness of the air. It turns a "discipline" into a "delight."
3. Use Creativity as Worship
God is the Ultimate Creator. Since we are made in His image, we have a creative spark inside us, too. For some reason, we’ve categorized "spiritual things" as only reading or talking. But what about painting? What about playing an instrument? What about cooking a meal for someone you love?
If you feel stuck in a rut, try expressing your faith through a different medium. Journaling is great, but try "art journaling" where you doodle your prayers. Or put on some music and just move. Movement and creativity allow you to process emotions that words sometimes can't reach. It takes the pressure off "saying the right thing" and lets your heart communicate directly with the Father.
4. Master the "Micro-Moment"
One of the biggest stressors in our spiritual lives is the idea that if we don't have a solid hour of "deep study," it wasn't enough. But let’s look at the science of personal development: small, consistent habits always beat occasional, massive efforts.
Try "Breath Prayers." These are short, one-sentence prayers you can say in a single breath.
Inhale: “The Lord is my shepherd...” Exhale: “...I have everything I need.”
Inhale: “Holy Spirit...” Exhale: “...guide my words.”
These micro-moments interrupt the stress cycle in your brain and pull you back into a state of peace. It’s a way to "pray without ceasing" that doesn't require you to quit your day job.

5. Get Real About the "Unholy Trinity"
Sometimes, the reason our spiritual walk feels stressful is that we are secretly being chased by three things I call the "Unholy Trinity": Self-reliance, self-condemnation, and self-centeredness.
When we rely only on ourselves, we get exhausted. When we condemn ourselves, we feel distant from God. And when we are self-centered, we lose our purpose. I’ve written more about how to break these cycles in my post on The Unholy Trinity. Identifying which of these is stealing your joy is the first step toward a more playful, lighthearted faith.
6. Stop Flying Solo
Faith was never meant to be a solo sport. A lot of our stress comes from trying to figure everything out on our own. We get stuck in our own heads, and our perspectives get skewed.
Finding a community of like-minded people who are also "clumsily" following Jesus can be a total game-changer. When you realize that everyone else is also struggling to stay focused during prayer or wondering if they’re "doing it right," the pressure evaporates. If you’re looking for that kind of tribe, come join us at The Journey Collective. It’s a place for growth, laughter, and real-life faith, minus the judgment.

7. Focus on Peace, Not Perfection
The goal of your spiritual walk isn't to become a "perfect" version of yourself. The goal is to grow closer to the One who is already perfect.
When you make a mistake, or you have a "bad" spiritual week, how do you react? Do you beat yourself up? Or do you treat yourself with the same grace God offers you? Faith-based transformation happens in the atmosphere of grace, not the atmosphere of criticism. If your spiritual practices are making you more stressed, more judgmental, or more anxious, it’s time to pivot.
Ask yourself: Does this practice bring me closer to God’s peace? If the answer is no, give yourself permission to change it.
God is much more interested in your heart than your habits.
